Blandys | Madeira

Winemaker - Francisco Albuquerque
Blandys | Madeira image

For nearly two centuries Blandy's has played a leading role in the development of Madeira wine and in the economic development of the remote sub-tropical Atlantic island from which this unique wine style takes its name.

Madeira is located in the Atlantic Ocean 600 km due west of the Moroccan coast and 850km south-west of Portugal. The island was discovered in 1419 by the Portuguese mariner Gonçalves Zarco who named the beautiful and densely wooded mountain island after the Portuguese word for wood or timber.

The Blandy family founded their winery in 1811 and are now the only remaining original owners involved in the Madeira trade. In 1989, the Symington family entered a partnership with the Blandy family and have used their winemaking experience, dedication to reinvestment in the vineyards and winery, and their worldwide distribution network to revitalize the Madeira trade.

Blandy's has quickly established itself as the premium Madeira. In 2007 Blandy's won every gold medal awarded at the Wine and Spirit Competition in the Madeira category, the Madeira trophy and gold medal at the Decanter Awards, and the Madeira Trophy and four out of seven gold medals at the International Wine Challenge.
